Quorn is basically a brand that uses mycoprotein, a meat substitute, derived from a natural fungus (Fusarium venenatum) to make various products to be used in place of meat. Some people refer to the fungus as a mushroom but do not mistake it for a mushroom because it isn’t one at all.

Quorn products are vegetarian, and they also have some vegan, certified by The Vegan Society, products as well. How Is Quorn Made?

The manufacturers of Quorn use fermentation to make the product. The process uses 90% less water and land than manufacturing animal protein, so it is environmentally friendly. Quorn’s journey starts from the ground, in the form of Fusarium venenatum, a fungus, and from there, things get a little complicated.

After F. venenatum is extracted from the ground, it’s grown in culture vessels and fed on some minerals and a glucose starch broth. The fungus undergoes fermentation and, when it is dried, it becomes mycoprotein.

The mycoprotein is then used as the foundation of Quorn. Many products also utilise egg albumen as a binder, which is moulded into all the various Quorn products that we know today.

Quorn Nutrition Profile 

What does Quorn’s nutritional profile say about it? Well, nutritionally it is considered quite healthy because it is high in protein, a good source of fibre, and low in saturated fat. Let's take a detailed look at everything this food houses:

Protein and Fat

The mycoprotein in Quorn is high in protein boasting 11 grams per 100 grams, and it is low in fat with only 4 grams in every 100 grams. This makes it a winning combo for people who want to monitor their weight and remain satiated and full. Plus, it has negligible salt content and 0.7 grams of saturated fat per 100 grams.

As far as Quorn is concerned, there are around 14 grams of protein in 100 grams of plain Quorn. The exact amount of protein depends on the type of product, for instance, Quorn chicken slices boast 16.3 grams of protein per 100 grams, and the meals have lesser protein. 

Fibre and Amino Acids

Quorn is rich in fibre, offering 6 grams per 100 grams, which helps in the reduction of cholesterol and is vital in feeding the gut bacteria. 

Moreover, the mycoprotein is considered a ‘complete protein’, because it houses all the nine essential amino acids required by adults. Plus, it offers 9 grams of carbs per 100 grams.

Calcium and Other Nutrients 

Mycoprotein is also an amazing source of calcium. We need calcium for strong teeth and bones. It is also a good source of potassium, needed to regulate the balance of fluids in our body, and phosphorous required to release energy from the food.

You will find some sugar in some products like Quorn mince, but it is in a small amount. With natural caramelised sugar in the mince, it is not a problem because it is still very low in sugar i.e. 0.6 grams per 100 grams.

However, you should always check the labels on the products to ensure that you are satisfied with their overall nutritional profile. 

Is Quorn Healthier Than Meat?

In general, it’s considered healthier than some types of meats because it doesn’t contain hormones and antibiotics. Plus, it is lower in saturated fat than rib-eye steak, sausages, bacon, and lamb.

However, always bear in mind that Quorn is still a highly processed product and isn’t classified as a natural product as compared to meat.

How Healthy Is Quorn and Quorn Recipes?

Taking everything into account, you may question how healthy are Quorn recipes and the product itself.

According to its nutritional profile, it looks healthy but, is it? Quorn is an attractive meat substitute, it’s not high in calories, might help you lose weight, and won’t give you high cholesterol.

However, if you use other Quorn products, then check the amount of salt they have. Some will have more salt than others which isn’t good for your health, especially if you have high blood pressure. So, always check the other ingredients the products might contain.
